The book is already a machine. That’s the starting point for this exhibition at the Jack Ginsberg Centre for Book Arts inside Wits Art Museum. Rather than pitting the analogue book against AI, it puts the two in conversation.
The artists’ books here ask something physical of you: they have to be turned, unfolded, rotated or decoded, and sometimes the meaning lives in a cut, a binding or what’s been deliberately left out. AI enters as a way to test familiar ideas about memory, authorship and reading itself.
Curated by Ciara Struwig, Renzo Filinich and Stacy Hardy. The curators return for a walkabout on Saturday 17 October. Parking is available in the garage beneath WAM.
